Be patient with them. Wiki index with many more subjects. Why you should avoid BMO Investorline self. I have been with Investorline for over 15 years and lately it has been nothing but problems. In the past year their service deteriorated to the level of totally unacceptable. Most problems are with online access and underlying trading system.

Here is the list of problems, some of them are extremely critical:. Online login to your account takes maximum password size of 6 characters and the passwords are not even case sensitive. Any teenage hacker can break-in to your account in less than 10 minutes.

Trading passwords are more secure, but I am still uncomfortable that it is so easy to access client's holdings - to me it's a big privacy issue. I raised this issue with IL over 3 years ago and they told me that this will be fixed soon - nothing is done as of Jan Try to login to your account around 9: It takes failed attempts with very "informative" errors like "The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.

This morning I couldn't login to my account for 25 minutes. Even with successful login it takes up to 3 minutes delay until you finally see your portfolio page. Finally, you often get disconnected after just a few minutes - I guess it is because their servers cannot handle that many simultaneous connections.

In response to my complain I received this email response from IL support: Speaking of customer support it is very bad. Half of the traders you reach on the phone barely speak English. When I reported some of the problems in my emails to support - the answers I received were either inappropriate e. What scares me most about being with IL is how buggy is their software. The numbers I see on my portfolio page often don't correspond to reality - I have to manually export my portfolio page to Excel to get correct numbers.

This problem is intermittent, but it occurred to me at least 4 times in the past month. In one of my accounts I actively trade in options and in the past 3 months I encountered at least 5 days when I would not be able to see bid and ask for all my options for hours.

Suddenly, all bid and ask values go to zero and even when you click on the option to trade you get zero values in trading screen. As you can imagine, this is totally unacceptable for options trader as you are unable to trade without knowing what the bids and asks are.

At this point I had enough and will be moving to another discount brokerage. It is too bad as IL used to be the best in Canada. I don't know who re-designed their interfaces a couple of years ago , but apparently it was designed and maintained so badly that they can no longer provide service to clients and they are obviously unable to fix these problems.

I'd rather stick my penis in a pencil sharpener than deal with BMO ever again. Thanks for the warning though. How do you think they sharpened this? I closed all of my accounts with BMO because of Investorline issues.

Very happy so far! Thank You John, question for you; Does Questrade charge me for being inactive? Lets say i didn't trad anything in 1 year. I am considering Questrade, are there any option traders here who use Questrade?

With 1,, possible combinations the average script could run through that easily in a matter of minutes. Not even double digit minutes. I complained about this several years ago. Their response was that after 3 failed attempt, the account is locked and you need to see them in person to unlock it.

Re "after 3 failed attempt, the account is locked" - Not if they use a pool of IP addresses or multiple bots Yeah, WTF is with major banks and shitty passwords?

My CIBC banking password is the least secure password I have. People are less likely to be able to brute-force my spam email account than my bank account, super ridiculous.

And no, brute force won't work because most system locks your account after three or five attempts. CIBC gets hacked, their PW db stolen, downloaded. There is no longer anything to stop weeks and weeks of continuous ecryption.

And passwords as shirt as the ones CIBC forces you to use will be the first to fall out. I'm seeing a lot more love for Questrade than Interactive Brokers in this thread, and in this board in general.

Meanwhile, I just opened an IB account. Hopefully I won't regret it. To be fair, I'm sure their login requirements prohibit more than a small number of trials before banning you from trying any further. This makes the short password requirement less of a security issue. I don't disagree that it is an issue, its just not the "any teenage hacker" issue you make it out to be. The problem isn't people sitting there typing things into a browser page, its the ease with which a compromised password database can be brute-forced by some Russians with a rack of GPUs.

The easiest passwords are the first to be decrypted. It's borderline unacceptable that I cannot set high priority passwords, such as with my bank or brokerage, to be digit strings of randomly generated gobbledigook. Over my life I have used just about all the Canadian brokers. I hate them all. My solution is to keep two accounts open so that when I get pissed off I start moving cash out of that account into the other.

Yes, I appreciate the broker couldn't give a darn I've heard a lot of brokers actually have this same issue. A heads up to other people Hence, I don't think it is the case.

You never knoowww unless you try. The number of times I've decided "No, I have tried rebooting that makes no sense" and then rebooting fixed it I mentioned this issue calculations of totals to people in my investment club and everyone was quite surprised. Most people don't bother to recalc A lot of people assume some of these totals mean things they don't. It's silly how this is sort of a key service and it's unreliable at best with so many.
